Tasha Tuesday

Today is the type of day that I love. Winds are shifting, but it’s still warm. Dark clouds are gathering in the west, it’s got the look of gray foreboding. It’s Bronte weather. A storm is going to blow over the prairie soon.
Of course that meant first thing this morning I needed to leash up the dogs and head out into it. I think Tasha Tudor would approve. I imagine she went out and walked her corgis in all kinds of weather. She probably slipped on a beautiful cloak or something and went out into the wilds like a Bronte sister as well.
Then, I’m sure, she realized how perfect a good gray and stormy day is for painting and headed in to her work table. That’s my plan for today as well.
There is nothing, nothing more perfect, then cuddling up with a quilt, sleeping dogs at your feet, paint brush in hand as thunder rumbles in the distance. Rainy days make for good art.

I don’t know about you, but the world around me here in Oklahoma in late January is sort of brown. In the past I hated that. But as I get older, the more I like brown. Brown is the perfect mellow backdrop for all sorts of things. And, like white, there are all sorts of wonderful shades and depths to brown, from earthy dark to gentle pale. Just look at the tones of these gourds, hanging off the back fence just waiting for some adventurous wrens or chickadees to move in and devour last summer’s giant sunflower:

And while from all appearances the field just outside my back gate is all asleep, there is some life to it! little birds and hawks and even an evening owl are always flitting around in it. My bunnies have gotten quite spoiled and prefer the prairie grass (with some rosemary from the herb garden— it’s the only thing still green around here!) with their morning breakfast.

People are often surprised that I keep the bunnies outdoors in most weather (aside from when its 114 outside, a sweaty rabbit is quite a miserable sight!) but they love it. They have lived indoors as well and they get agitated and jumpy. Outside, they love to feel the breeze in their fur and smell the smells and hear the sounds. They are so laid back and happy outside. They are definitely outdoor creatures. Of course I do cover their hutch when it rains or gets very windy. And they’re latched in so they can’t get out (although they have escaped a time or two…one morning a while back I came outside to find the girls exhausting and lounging in the yard from a good pre-dawn romp around the yard! Mr. Darcy, of course, was waiting patiently in the hutch for them to return. He’s not the adventurous sort.)

As I’ve written to you the sky has darkened and it’s that quiet before the storm. I am off to wet my brush and get to work. I’m sure that Tasha would agree!~

  5. I love this quote! Tasha was very outspoken wasn't she!I'd personally love to have enough skirts or dresses to wear them all the time. Unfortunately I'm struggling to lose my baby belly after 4 children & still have 3 pairs of pants in my wardrobe I wear while thrifting for more skirts that fit in a flattering manner. I'm a lover of history & period films, and personally don't like my sillouette when I wear pants as historically it looks masculine to ME.I know pants are considered socially acceptable for women today, so I don't judge others for what they choose to wear, though it saddens me to see so much flesh on display these days. When I wear the pants I do have I pair them with a long smock top or a feminine blouse that covers the crutch area.Great topic for conversation in an era when anything goes!Clairei

  6. I have been a skirt only wearer for over 8yr now. I wear skirts because I feel super feminine in them 🙂 I feel pretty when I wear one and even in the cold winters here in PA, I am able to layer quite a bit under them. Tasha was outspoken and rightly so, she was raised in a time where women never questioned their clothing :)Blessings,m.

  7. Not that I don't like dresses and skirts, but I LOVE jeans and fisherman's sweaters, trousers and brogues. I think Katharine Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich got it right. Sorry, Tasha! 🙂

  10. I always wear skirts at work – don't know why, I just do. I got asked once if it was because of my religion. LOL I do love wearing a beautiful skirt – and it does make me feel really feminine. But I also do love my jeans when I am feeling the need to be REALLY comfy, too!

  11. Women of the past were modest and elegant~ beautiful flowers to protect, not a commodity to be used. Like the grand architecture and craftsmanship of antique homes and buildings, so much grandeur has been lost in our fast-paced modern society! I love dressing in early Victorian costume with my acapella singing group. I feel so much more a woman than in my jeans, and it truly reflects in the way I carry myself. True women are not just endangered species but nearly extinct! I deeply admire Tasha's courage to be true to herself and unafraid to march to her own drummer. Jeans are comfortable and convenient… so I cave when it comes to that… But I really appreciated Tasha for having the inner strength and conviction to garden, weave, cook, and work in her beautiful period dresses throughout her life. She was an example to all of us, and kept us connected to our \”inner woman\”!

  18. You save the video in draft mode. Then go in to edit….two options HTML and Compose…go into HMTL… at the top first character of the script that is there…tab down a couple of times. Go back into Compose and you can see that you have some space above the video to write what you want…anyway this is what I do because it can drive you crazy sometimes:) Hope it makes sense.

  29. In Florida, it is looking like spring with azaleas starting to bloom and redbud trees all turning pink! But I agree with Heather's worry…. Does this foretell another long blistering hot summer????? Oh these daffodils remind me of my Mom's plantings by the front steps !! I imagine that Tasha's yard was a sea of yellow in the Vermont May!

  30. Oh daffodils. They get me every time. I remember in that book how Tasha talks about planting bazillions of daffodil bulbs. Its so lovely to see them popping up in early spring. I hope you get your garden! I'd love to start one since this will be our first year in a house with a backyard! We have a baby on the way due in early May, so all my attention will be on keeping him nurtured and alive. 🙂 Who knows if I can manage to do the same with veggies and flowers!

  44. For sure this has been a mild winter for us down here in Florida too. I believe that Tasha planted volumes of daffodils in many varieties at her home. Somehow I think I read that in one of her publications. I just love daffodils with their bright yellow…. Sheer happiness!! Heather do you have any spring paintings that show off daffodils??

Monty Don writes in his Ivington Diaries that his wife Sarah's birthday – 15th February marks the beginning of spring for him and consequently marks the first day he starts serious work in his garden.Stephanieps I don't know if you are aware I am having a giveaway at the moment which I think might appeal to you.
