Tasha Tuesday

Today is the type of day that I love. Winds are shifting, but it’s still warm. Dark clouds are gathering in the west, it’s got the look of gray foreboding. It’s Bronte weather. A storm is going to blow over the prairie soon.
Of course that meant first thing this morning I needed to leash up the dogs and head out into it. I think Tasha Tudor would approve. I imagine she went out and walked her corgis in all kinds of weather. She probably slipped on a beautiful cloak or something and went out into the wilds like a Bronte sister as well.
Then, I’m sure, she realized how perfect a good gray and stormy day is for painting and headed in to her work table. That’s my plan for today as well.
There is nothing, nothing more perfect, then cuddling up with a quilt, sleeping dogs at your feet, paint brush in hand as thunder rumbles in the distance. Rainy days make for good art.

I don’t know about you, but the world around me here in Oklahoma in late January is sort of brown. In the past I hated that. But as I get older, the more I like brown. Brown is the perfect mellow backdrop for all sorts of things. And, like white, there are all sorts of wonderful shades and depths to brown, from earthy dark to gentle pale. Just look at the tones of these gourds, hanging off the back fence just waiting for some adventurous wrens or chickadees to move in and devour last summer’s giant sunflower:

And while from all appearances the field just outside my back gate is all asleep, there is some life to it! little birds and hawks and even an evening owl are always flitting around in it. My bunnies have gotten quite spoiled and prefer the prairie grass (with some rosemary from the herb garden— it’s the only thing still green around here!) with their morning breakfast.

People are often surprised that I keep the bunnies outdoors in most weather (aside from when its 114 outside, a sweaty rabbit is quite a miserable sight!) but they love it. They have lived indoors as well and they get agitated and jumpy. Outside, they love to feel the breeze in their fur and smell the smells and hear the sounds. They are so laid back and happy outside. They are definitely outdoor creatures. Of course I do cover their hutch when it rains or gets very windy. And they’re latched in so they can’t get out (although they have escaped a time or two…one morning a while back I came outside to find the girls exhausting and lounging in the yard from a good pre-dawn romp around the yard! Mr. Darcy, of course, was waiting patiently in the hutch for them to return. He’s not the adventurous sort.)

As I’ve written to you the sky has darkened and it’s that quiet before the storm. I am off to wet my brush and get to work. I’m sure that Tasha would agree!~

  1. Hi Heather! Thanks for stopping by. I totaly missed this changing of blog thing. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for your garden. 🙂 I don't garden myself but every plant or flower I owned in the house has died on me so I know how you must be feeling. 🙂 Yaaay for the hibiscus! 🙂

  7. Oh! This post makes me so happy. I am working at Tasha Tudor's garden this summer, it's truly magical and inspiring (although we have a lot of work to do to restore it to it's peak beauty). Your garden is gorgeous! I can't wait until I have a little piece of land of my own. Right now I just have to make do with a container garden on my fire escape, which doesn't make my landlord too happy. Oh, well.

  8. Heather, I absolutely love and adore your artwork. I think we are kindreds. I love Tasha Tudor, one of my most favorite books from my childhood (A Time To Keep) was written and illustrated by her. She had such a charming way about her. Your blog is quaint and sweet. I love your folk style.

  12. Happy BELATED Tasha Tuesday! Ah, gardens…we've been plagued with woodchucks eating all our treats. We have put up new barriers and so far they seem to be working. Your hibiscus looks wonderful. Hopefully everything else shall bloom, too. 🙂 And what is that yummy treat on your plate – looks so delicious!

OOps….so I just sprinkled it on top, tasted just as good!~

  14. Dear Heather,I'm sorry about your gardens; our roses died in the first heat wave, too, so sad! At least we had peonies here. Hopefully the hotter spring means a cooler summer, eh?I'll be drooling over Tasha Tudor's Garden book, too, along with all her other goodies.Love,Marqueta

  20. Dear Heather,We do try to observe tea time, but the cleaning up before and after, with lots of little ones, can be daunting! Evangeline recently invited me to an \”animal tea\” that was quite lovely, with lots of rats, squirrels, and bears. We usually do mint plus something not quite so yummy, and use coconut cream and stevia (dairy and sugar intolerance, you know 😉 ). I think just doing whatever you can is fun!Love,Marqueta

But it's true, who doesn't love biscuits and scones in the middle of the day! You can take a look ay my Kindred Gathering blog for some other tea ideas at http://kindredgathering.posterous.com. 24. I was born & (partially) raised in Ireland, we had tea time there, too! I'm still a huge tea fanatic. Growing up, we usually had teatime in the evening, a couple of hours after dinner, while the whole family was still awake and sitting around the fire. Every night around 8pm my mom brewed a pot of black tea, which I drank with lots of milk. And the tea was accompanied by some light bedtime snack, either toast with butter & orange marmalade, or biscuits like this:http://cdn.egglesscooking.com/images/cookie/digestive-cookies.jpgThen of course we drank tea all throughout the rest of the day, too.The biggest mistake I notice most Americans make with tea is not using hot enough water. Black tea should always be made with boiling water, immediately after it's taken off the heat. (Water for green tea should be slightly cooler, but that's a different story.)

  25. I have been drinking more tea lately, but never in an official \”tea time\” manner. It would be SO fun to do, however. 🙂 I do love British traditions. 🙂 And I adore cream in my tea. 🙂

I just love that Garden Book, it is always an uplifter for me in the winter months when it is gray and dark all the time in my area ;-D My garden is a dry over heated sad affair too. And sadly so neglected because I have been packing to move. (I feel so guilty when I look out side) I think I will tend to it tomorrow. Well I enjoyed my Tasha Tues visit, Blessings, Linnie

  34. Hi, Heather. Thanks so much for the encouraging comment on my blog post about the value of handmade. 🙂 I love your artwork! I've heard other crafters talking about shows and finding their right niche and audience…that's something I've got to work on, I think. 🙂 Thankfully my parents have an extra table so I don't have to pay anything to set up at our farmer's market. I've only done one actual craft show so far, last fall. I did fairly well, because even though it was in a rural area, it draws in a big crowd from our surrounding area. I'm hoping to go again this fall, as well as maybe trying some new shows. 🙂 But that's what I love about Etsy- most of the people who shop there love supporting handmade! Anyway, thanks again for the advice!~Kristin

  36. Tasha Tudor is new to me, I must look out for her books. How horrible to have such drought. We are not doing too well for rain here in Wales and I have lost some of my hanging baskets to hubby's forgetfulness – they need watering every day when it's so dry and that's his job! – but it is nothing like you are suffering over there. I hope you get some cool rain soon 🙂

  49. What a lovely cosy workspace :)I kinda have a workspace and I kinda don't … it's the room that was my daughter's and that she still sleeps in when she's home. It doubles as a guest bedroom and 'trebles' as my study/studio. Which all kinda limits what I can do in there, but I love having it to reteat to 🙂
